Almost every Asian food we eat in the United States is UNAUTHENTIC. Trust me on this one, but there’s no hard feelings. That’s just the way it is. I’ve decided to start a blog series called “UNAUTHENTIC ASIAN” to illustrate some of these wrongfully claimed “Asian.”
I like to start this series with Eugene Villiatora. He’s one of the contestants of Top Chef Season 5.0 (btw, it’s a GREAT show!). Initially I cheered for him, you know, for him being Asian and all. I know he won’t win the show because there’s already an Asian winner in the past (Hung from Season 3.0). It’s all politics, dude. But! Now I have more the reason to believe he won’t win the show.

The contestants were asked to create a dish and then do a live TV-style demo in episode 6 of Season 5.0. Eugene, who prides himself as the SUSHI guy, decides to do a Sizzling Sashimi of Tuna and Snow Pea Shoot Salad with Daikon Vinaigrette… which is actually not a bad choice given the short amount of time they have to prep. But, hear this. Then one of the judges asked him “what is the difference between SUSHI and SASHIMI?” guess what his response was? “Umm… well, it depends on what you type of sushi you like.” HUH?! You pride yourself with Asian cuisine and you don’t know the difference? Sushi is slice of raw fish (or other ingredient), mixed with, laid over or wrapped in or around special sushi rice (rice with vinegar). Sashimi is simply the raw fish, often sliced very thinly. Even I knew that.
Eugene Villiatora… you are this week’s UNAUTHENTIC ASIAN!
